I use a lot of links, and only thumbnail images open in a separate window. Middle-click or right-click a link to open it in a new window or tab.

I've never been a beach person - nor much of a water person for that matter - there are only lakes and rivers in the land-locked Prairies scoured out of the ground by the glacial action of the last ice age and the meltwaters of the Rocky Mountains .

But, I think I could be...

While Hurricane Sandy makes a real mess up the eastern seaboard, here the only remnant is some wind and cooler temperatures. I have to wear real pants! The area here was pretty unscathed, just a short-lived flood watch on Canal Drive a block west, and that passed in a half day.

Right now I'm juggling being in the sun for warmth, and being able to see my laptop screen. The deck is still habitable though. :)

After several days with no boats on the water, when the sun returned and winds abated the boats returned, including one large 2-sheet sailing ship cruising southward over the Gulf Stream.

2012.11.01 The Cape Fear Fair & Expo

The Cape Fear Fair & Expo was in town, delayed slightly by Hurricane Sandy , and today was the only day to go for cheap ($5 for a walk-around ticket). There were 2 large tents of displays and animals, and the rest was rides and fairground junk foods.

The first tent had agricultural displays from the local 4-H clubs. Most were on environmental topics.

The first display to catch our attention was a selection of small tractors

of various vintages, restored just like old cars would be.

Who knew there were so many that anyone cared about?

The second tent was all livestock, for show and for sale.

There were chickens, turkeys, geese, rabbits, goats, cows, donkeys, and horses. It was a pretty lively place, with clucking and squawking and mooing and braying. Being city people, we had never seen so many different kinds of chickens, some pretty rare, and even veering on extinction. This is what a farm fair is about!

We wandered around the rides area after, ate a bit of junk food and watched people scare and/or nauseate themselves on the rides. A quaint county fair to close out the fall season. We got there as it opened, and crowds were light but grew as the evening progressed.

After the fair we retired to the deck of the beach house, to watch the almost-full moon rise over the ocean. I tried to take pictures as best I could but nothing beats the human eye for light capture, and this was the best of the dozen or so shots I took using every low-light setting my camera could do.
The spot of light to the upper-left is Jupiter; the spot on the lower-left is a fishing boat on the horizon.
