I've never been a beach person - nor much of a water person for that matter - there are only lakes and rivers in the land-locked Prairies scoured out of the ground by the glacial action of the last ice age and the meltwaters of the Rocky Mountains .
But, I think I could be... Place name links like Carolina Beach, NC go to Wikipedia. Place name links like Carolina Beach use the local tourism or government website.

Time to leave the beach and head west to other beaches, near where TFS lives. It'll take us a week to get there, with some stops along the way, and of course more pictures and commentary. But probably not until after we reach LA. We're going to miss this place, it's been a very special experience. The last few days have been a series of "last"s for both of us, but ahead are a series of "next"s that should be just as entertaining in their own way. This morning the sun rose into clear skies over a lively high-tide ocean, the wind had abated, and we could have one final coffee and newspapers on the deck in the warm sun. Going to miss that. Time to pack up and hit the road to make the 12:15 ferry. Don't expect much in the way of updates for a week, though there might be little ones along the way each night if our hotels have a good Internet connection.

And we're on the road to the other coast!
Just inside the South Carolina border on I-95 we started seeing large billboards exhorting us to stop at Pedro's place for a variety of road-traveller's needs, and of course we couldn't resist. South of the Border is a tourist stop with motels, eateries, entertainment, shops and of course fireworks. A little something for the whole family, we stopped for tacos and to marvel at the intentional campiness of the place. |

| We got into Atlanta around 9pm, staying in a quaint historic converted women's dormitory with the... errrr.... coziest room we've ever stayed in. A club below the place (the Highland Inn Ballroom) had hosted people like Jane Siberry and other recognizable names I don't remember according to signed photos and testimonials along a wall on the way to our room. Serviceable, but a little claustrophobic so we headed out into the evening to sample some of the sights and beers of the surrounding artsy Highlands neighbourhood. |
