I've been watching NASCAR for a few years now, after many years watching Formula 1. Not actually watching, more like having it on to accompany whatever I'm doing - on TV you miss the speed and sounds of a real race. I once had a taste of stock-car racing when I volunteered at the Edmonton Indy, and thought the thunderous sound of a V-8 pushrod engine at 9500 RPM was AMAZING.
So I'm planning to see a race - in Bristol, Tennessee ...

Beachside Day 1: Introducing the Beach |
Comment

As befits a Man At Leisure, I awoke around 10 or so, certainly not before. Coffee, and the ocean.

Plenty of nature out there... constant sound, like the critters in the woods for Bristol, but not just at night. |
It was overcast all day, which was quite fine, given the heat and humidity... and the beach! I haven't gamma-corrected any of these images - it was actually brighter than it seems. I altered between having a coffee on the deck and just being with the view, and setting up my laptop and phone, and moving TFS's wireless cablemodem to a spot in the living room to makek it more generally useful to the place, including the deck. Did laundry, puttered about the place, in no hurry to actually get to the ocean - it was right there waiting for me - I could keep an eye on it.
There were a few people and beach-delivery quads cruising the beach over the day, a few boats to the southeast. One beach service lets you pre-arrange an umbrella and chairs to be left and picked up from any spot on the beach, so their quads made regular sweeps to deliver or pick up. Otherwise it was pretty quiet, save for the constant sound of the surf breaking.
If you go back to the coastline image from yesterday, you'll see that there's a wide, shallow sea bottom off the coast, and then a dive into the deep. In this deep runs the Gulf Stream , bringing lots of warm water to heat and humidify this coast. Close to shore, the water is warm and shallow for a long way out - it's very easy to be in this water. The sand is fine like what used to be used for ashtrays.
So, let's go see this beach. The dunes are protected so you have to walk over them.

Here we are - the Atlantic Ocean. I did get closer, but not with my camera. |

And back to the parking lot. |
The view suitably recorded, I parked my stuff under a lifeguard tower and went to be with the ocean for a while, one of very few people out at that time. I just sat in the sand just at the edge of where the water could reach, not having anything in particular to do but be there. I think an hour in all.
Later that evening, I went out to TFS's production office, more unfamilar roads in the dark, to see where she spends her days (and evenings). Lots of creative people around in a makeshift office setting, with diagrams on the walls and notes and models in various places. Downstairs saw a bit of the wardrobe area, and then a zoom back to the beach-house for martinis and a walk south on the beach that got us too far north on our return and having to walk back down the avenue for a few blocks. In the dark, from the beach, all the buildings look pretty much the same, just large vs small. We're going to have to put a light on the deck in future.
Only up until 4am - I'm a verrry baaad influence, but lessening... |
