I've never been a beach person - nor much of a water person for that matter - there are only lakes and rivers in the land-locked Prairies scoured out of the ground by the glacial action of the last ice age and the meltwaters of the Rocky Mountains .
But, I think I could be... Place name links like Carolina Beach, NC go to Wikipedia. Place name links like Carolina Beach use the local tourism or government website.

My First Beach Sunrise |
Comment
|
It's 6:45 am, and I'm sitting on the deck as the sun rises, rather quickly down here, the clouds all reddened by the rising sun. There's a fishing boat not far offshore, lit with white and green lights, the only one so far. My first sunrise here. I'm attempting to take some pictures every couple minutes, though no camera (of mine) can match the human eye, but I'll do my best. I'm not the only one trying to capture the reddening sky: there's a fellow on the walkway one over leaning over a camera on a tripod. It's taken about 20 minutes (it's 7:05 now) for the sky to go from dark and red to light enough to read a book.
It's a little chilly this morning - I have to wear a jacket - but it will warm up quickly as the sun starts to shine on the deck. Pretty darn splendid anyway.
TFS and I are off to Charleston, SC to see her second-cousin who is a stewardess on a big boat owned by a rich New Yorker who made his money on taxi cabs. Another ferry ride, and a bit of a problem with starting the Cabrio - methinks the battery is dodgy but the car starts and runs off the ferry so we press on, past Myrtle Beach, which looks like a beach version of Pigeon Forge, southward down the coast.
TFS was shaking with nervous excitement, apparently

TFS's cousin and the ship cook meet us for drinks and dinner and they are adorable. Quite the different life they have, working on a 60-foot boat that the owner and his wife visit from time to time. Complete with a small boat to visit shore, and a Mini Cooper when docked. Two 600hp CAT diesel engines running the thing, major boner material for engine nerds - you could eat off any surface in the engine room, the bridge is all computerised with 6 screens (one for Facebook), more living space than many apartments, and a crew of 6. It's one of 3 boats he has, and not the biggest boat in the marina, by 40 feet. Not a life we can even imagine having. Buy those lotto tickets!

Chewing Some Charleston History |

We did some Charleston touring before heading home. Charleston has a huge amount of history, and a thriving business in telling you about it. We took a mule-drawn carriage tour to see some of it, complete with a guide who was a major sh*t-artist in presenting a pile of historical details with plenty of charm to help his tip total at the end of it. Very entertaining and informative nonetheless. |
