I've never been a beach person - nor much of a water person for that matter - there are only lakes and rivers in the land-locked Prairies scoured out of the ground by the glacial action of the last ice age and the meltwaters of the Rocky Mountains .

| Casey's Buffet Barbecue & Home Cookin is a rather legendary eatery in Wilmington. It's not a fancy place - just the opposite, very homey with a feeling like a church basement, and food like it was made by church ladies. The best fried and barbecued chicken I've had in the US so far. Lots of soul-food: collard greens, okra, chitlins, catfish, sweet ham. Black church ladies in their Sunday-goin-to-meetin fineries, with hats. Urbanspoon has more pictures. |

Wilmington Christmas Parade |

Christmas is really all over this place. Tonight was the Christmas parade in downtown Wilmington. We found a free parking spot 2 blocks away from the beginning of the route, and a spot to watch it start. A rather disappointing parade compared to the one in Carolina Beach - no marching bands or music or much involvement from the crowd of onlookers, and bulked up with A LOT of beauty queens - they seem to be an industry in these parts. Nonetheless there were festive floats with lights, candy tossed or handed out to happy kids, and people seemed to enjoy themselves.
