I've never been a beach person - nor much of a water person for that matter - there are only lakes and rivers in the land-locked Prairies scoured out of the ground by the glacial action of the last ice age and the meltwaters of the Rocky Mountains .
But, I think I could be... Place name links like Carolina Beach, NC go to Wikipedia. Place name links like Carolina Beach use the local tourism or government website.

Solvang, California |
Comment

When I was about 15 our family took a bus tour to Disneyland. One of our overnight stops was in the little tourist town of Solvang, CA which was founded in the early 1900s by a group of Danish immigrants seeking to escape the cold winters of the US midwest. Solvang has since been developed as a Denmark-themed tourist destination with buildings and shops and food styled after "the old country." My Mom still has memories of our stop there. So, with a sunny warm-ish day ahead we were off on a top-down drive north.

I sent my Mom a postcard. |
Solvang also has a Vintage Motorcycle Museum which we didn't visit because we were off down the road to Buellton, CA because we were hungry.
Hungry for pea soup! Specifically, pea soup at Pea Soup Andersen's, a place TFS remembered as a popular stop when travelling as a child. So we both got to re-live some childhood memories. |

Elephant Seals |

Today we go see some marine life up the coast. Not fishes, but the largest Elephant Seal rookery on the west coast, north of San Simeon, CA . A long stretch of beach is a breeding home for hundreds of the beasts, laying like brown slugs |

on the sand, lumbering about, snorting, flipping sand, mating, birthing, sunning and tussling for dominance. They make quite a constant impressive racket that can't be captured with pictures. This time of year is a peak for mating and birthing so it's quite a sight. |

A Drive to Palmdale |
Comment
|
Today is a "wiggly road" trip. The mountains around LA have lots of canyon and forest roads, mostly 2 lanes, with elevations up to 4000 feet and subject to closure or use of tire chains. We went to the other side of the San Gabriel Mountains through Angeles National Forest to Palmdale, CA . Not much to see or do in Palmdale, but a good mountain drive. |
