I use a lot of links, and only thumbnail images open in a separate window. Middle-click or right-click a link to open it in a new window or tab.

I've never been a beach person - nor much of a water person for that matter - there are only lakes and rivers in the land-locked Prairies scoured out of the ground by the glacial action of the last ice age and the meltwaters of the Rocky Mountains .

But, I think I could be...

2013.04.11 Santa Monica Pier at Night

Comment

It's a nice warm evening, here in the valley at least, but we'll hop over the Santa Monica Mountains to visit the Santa Monica Pier at night and see the pretty lights.

Unfortunately the wheel was closed so we couldn't ride it.

2013.04.12 Concrete Creeks and Rivers

Comment

Downstream of mountains to the north, east, and south Los Angeles has a number of watershed pathways it must manage. Many of the rivers and creeks have changed course across the flat San Fernando Valley over LA's history, so in an effort to tame them and build around them they've been paved (some say "straightjacketed") with concrete. I've been taking photos of some of the feeder waterways and the Los Angeles River .

Throughout the valley channels like this one cut through neighbourhoods, carrying tributary water to the river. I think this one is Calabasas Creek. There are houses on both sides of this channel.

Bell Creek about to enter the River, diverted around Canoga Park High School .

This is the beginning of the LA River, behind Canoga Park High. Bell Creek and Calabasas (?) Creek join, the latter passing under the school to get here.

Off goes the river
into Los Angeles

Much further downstream in Burbank, the channel cuts deeper and wider to handle the collected flow.

Even though the river is usually dry, it's designed to handle peak conditions from a number of sources.

2013.04.12 Universal CityWalk

Comment

TFS suggests we go to Universal CityWalk for a little tourist exposure. The open-air walk has shops, restaurants, amusements, and of course a large theater showing Universal movies. At the end of the walk is the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour .

For $50 and a laiability waiver you can "skydive" over a large fan blowing inside a clear tube.

2013.04.13 Woolsey Canyon

Comment

Woolsey Canyon Road is a short route from Woodland Hills to Simi Valley . Twisty, sometimes rough, shoulderless, and largely unprotected, it's a fun route and one of the first I drove after I got here. Today I wanted to take some pictures so we set out on it as a recreational way to visit a Chinese buffet place in Simi.

The road got a little hairier and some guy in a Bentley (!) was pressing behind me. Without any turn-outs, I just concentrated on the road from here.

You can see someone else's drive [YouTube] or other videos [YouTube] that show what this canyon is like.
