Since last winter went so swimmingly, let's try it again! TFS has very graciously opened her home in the west San Fernando Valley to me again. This time her daughter AS (and dog and cat) are there too. Two women + two dogs + two cats = not my usual solitary winter again. Huzzah!

On a drive along the Mulholland Highway , I came to an intersection I don't remember from past visits and took a right instead of a left, ending up in a new place with this view.

A trip for a birthday lunch to Cold Spring Tavern, which started as a stagecoach stop in 1886 and has been serving food (including wild game - I had a venison sausage burger) and libations continuously since then.

In 1886 this tavern was known as "Cold Spring Relay Station": it was the half-way stop between "Mattei's Tavern" to the north, and Patrick Kinevan's "Summit House" to the south.

Ho-Ho-Ho! #52

In those days sturdy stagecoaches known as "mudwagons" traveled the rugged San Marcos Pass . It was here horses were changed and passengers rested and enjoyed the noon-day meal.

In 1900 the Doulton family bought the old tavern with its adjoining 40 acres. In 1941 they sold it to the Ovington family whose daughter Audrey Ovington owns it to this day.

A return to Deer Creek Road to watch a sunset 16:40 - 17:02 on Christmas Eve. A shot every 2 minutes.

One downside of southern life is that sunsets are very fast. The sun drops into the horizon rather than gliding in to provide a long twilight.     from TFS
