Since last winter went so swimmingly, let's try it again! TFS has very graciously opened her home in the west San Fernando Valley to me again. This time her daughter AS (and dog and cat) are there too. Two women + two dogs + two cats = not my usual solitary winter again. Huzzah!

2014.04.23 Anaheim Ducks at Dallas Stars

Time for some hockey. Live hockey. Live playoff hockey. Tonight is game 4 of the first round of the 2014 NHL playoffs with the Anaheim Ducks visiting the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center in downtown Dallas, TX . Anaheim is up 2-1 in the series, and tonight's game follows their first loss to the Stars on Monday night. Can they win tonight and then win the series back at home on Friday?

Today is definitely not hockey weather, at least as a Canadian would expect it - it was 80-some degrees F (30-ish C) outside, a little bit of a heatwave.

I read some comments about the American Airlines Center being a missed opportunity to create an iconic building of some sort. Dallas seems to be filled with gratuitous "modern" architecture from the 1980s, so perhaps that was the basis for the sentiment. But it's a perfectly fine building, with huge screens allowing a view of the game from the street - bring a lawn chair and watch the game.

These B_G signs are scattered throughout Dallas, encouraging people to pose for pictures between them to spell BIG. So I did, one with a basketball theme (the NCAA Final Four was in nearby Arlington, TX earlier in the month), and one with a hockey theme.

The daytime heat coupled with a minute of carelessness on my part led to some misfortune before the game started. I brought a heavier shirt, anticipating the need to keep warmer than the this shirt I wore suitable to the warm day. While changing in a mensroom stall I put my Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone down and by the time I left the stall and realized I left without my phone, barely two minutes later, I returned to find it gone. A rush to Lost and Found and no one had turned it in. Perhaps later in the game.

Every time the word "star" came up in the US anthem, fans yelled "STARS", loudly.

The Stars won 5-2; Ducks were without Ryan Getzlaf and Teemu Selanne

The Ducks' loss wasn't the only disappointment - my phone wasn't turned in. Calls to Lost & Found the day after and the day after that were fruitless.
