Since last winter went so swimmingly, let's try it again! TFS has very graciously opened her home in the west San Fernando Valley to me again. This time her daughter AS (and dog and cat) are there too. Two women + two dogs + two cats = not my usual solitary winter again. Huzzah!

After some flora, now some fauna. Big fauna. Big Texas fauna. That means cows. TFS wanted to see some cows. Fort Worth, TX has cows, at the Fort Worth Stockyards . Twice a day there's a cattle drive, and that's where we went.

First we have to get there. It's about a half-hour trip on the I-30 , on a weekend when traffic is light. With truck traffic and ever-present contruction and crappy pavement the trip can be a lot longer on weekdays - not a fun route to drive.

Now we're on East Exchange Avenue in the Fort Worth Stockyards District waiting for the Fort Worth Her Cattle Drive to start. The crowd grows in anticipation.

And... they're done. About 2 minutes to pass by us. Maybe a dozen of them, sauntering by, dropping a turd here and there. But they are Texas Longhorns and we did get to experience them up close. Happy!
For a fee, you can get closer, like these people. But we're cheapskates, and didn't want to smell like cow.
(These pics are from a visit a month ago when we missed the drive by minutes.)

So we sauntered down the street to see the sights.

Interesting place for an afternoon, lots of restaurants and shops, a very popular tourist attraction. And, you can drink beer while you walk around!             We were hungry for BBQ. Last time we were in Fort Worth we tried Billy's Oak Acres BBQ, a funky little place west of the city. But, on Sundays it seems most of Texas shuts down around 5:00, if not earlier. Today was Saturday and we were in luck! Damn tasty food, excellent prices, worth the effort of a repeat visit.
