Since last winter went so swimmingly, let's try it again! TFS has very graciously opened her home in the west San Fernando Valley to me again. This time her daughter AS (and dog and cat) are there too. Two women + two dogs + two cats = not my usual solitary winter again. Huzzah! Place name links like Los Angeles, CA go to Wikipedia. Well, all things must come to an end, and my winter sojourn is soon to be one of them. I expect to leave on Monday the 12th for three days of solitary driving northward and plenty of time to miss everyone here, especially TFS, and ponder on all that happened over the last six months.
I'll follow the route home I took last year with different stops (and one less) since I'll be going for maximum distance coverage rather than any touring. I'll be leaving temperatures approaching 100°F (37°C) down here in Woodland Hills, CA to expected daily highs just under 20°C (68°F) at home, a little more moderate. Hopefully I can drive top-down the whole way.
Weather Enroute:
Woodland Hills, CA Barstow, CA
Las Vegas, NV
St. George, UT Provo, UT Salt Lake City, UT Ogden, UT
Idaho Falls, ID
Butte, MT Helena, MT Great Falls, MT

There won't likely be any new entries until I get home, as I'll be driving flat-out each day and only stopping to eat and sleep. Then I have a lot of backfilling to do with picture-intensive entries from museums we visited and our cross-country drive from Dallas, TX . Some good stuff yet to come! |

I'm going to make the trip home in 2 days rather than 3, for a few reasons. One, fun's over and I might as well get the trip home over with. Two, an additional stop between Salt Lake City, UT and home leaves me just killing time overnight in some place like Great Falls, MT , after which there's one long boring 8-hour stretch of flat nothingness to see out the window. And three, I'll miss rush-hour traffic in Salt Lake City and Calgary, AB and that's got to be worth a couple hours. I'll get to see all the interesting scenery I'm going to see in daylight.
The extra five hours on Tuesday is all on divided highway I've travelled often before, and with an early start most of it will be in daylight. I'll see how feasible that feels Tuesday morning after Monday's drive. |
