I use a lot of links, and only thumbnail images open in a separate window. Middle-click or right-click a link to open it in a new window or tab.

I've never been a beach person - nor much of a water person for that matter - there are only lakes and rivers in the land-locked Prairies scoured out of the ground by the glacial action of the last ice age and the meltwaters of the Rocky Mountains .

But, I think I could be...

Yerba Buena Road (B-C) is the westernmost drive through the Santa Monica Mountains and eventually connects to the Mulholland Highway . It was a day too hot to sit at a computer so I added it to my canyon-driving repertoire. I was more in a mood for driving than photographing, so all I have is two panoramas.

Since we arrived back here we haven't gone to the beach at all. We've been near a beach, but not actually on a beach. Today we'll get some beach time, sandy feet, sea-air in our noses, at La Piedra State Beach just west of Malibu. It's not your usual wide beach with parking next to it - there's a steep-ish trail from the parking lot down over some rocks and onto the sand, so it's used mostly by locals and those wanting less crowd. And today is a crowded beach day - it's 92ºF (33ºC) in the valley but a little more moderate on the coast.

Down to the beach. The path is steep, all dirt, some crude steps, with big rocks to navigate over onto the sand. Not for the lazy or rushed. Or sandals.

On the Beach.
Unlike Carolina Beach there's a lot of plant matter, and few shells. And the water is cooler.

A little Hollywood was out today too:
two helicopters passed by a couple
times, the seaside one filming the
landside one.

Once we've had our fill of sun and sand and surf it's a laboured climb back up that path and off to dine at Neptune's Net Seafood Restaurant, a cafeteria with picnic tables, usually crowded with bikers, but not today so we had a window seat.
In the Santa Monica Mountains navigation has largely trumped nature - exceptions are uncommon though quite inconvenient and often tragic. One has to be aware of those exceptions, in some places even more. We headed homeward over Yerba Buena Road to tempt fate with this bit of uneasy road and rock coexistence.

don't linger...
