Since last winter went so swimmingly, let's try it again! TFS has very graciously opened her home in the west San Fernando Valley to me again. This time her daughter AS (and dog and cat) are there too. Two women + two dogs + two cats = not my usual solitary winter again. Huzzah!

On a super-hot day, we drive from Flagstaff, AZ to Los Angeles, CA . We've warmed up with a drive north from Sedona, AZ . Now we turn west at Flagstaff and head west out of mountain terrain back to the desert. Google Maps says it's 484 mi (779 km) and 7:02, driving on the I-40 ( I-40_AZ and I-40_CA ) then the I-15_CA . It's just after 12:00.

We're not taking the direct route.

Detour!   At Seligman, AZ we take a right to leave I-40_AZ and drive Historic Route 66 (AZ) .
Go there now and come back to see the rest of the trip. Or just scroll down and see it on the next page.

Back from our detour on Route 66. Time to finish this journey back west from Dallas, Texas.

On the I-40 again, almost I-40_CA .

Welcome to California

Needles, CA is a bit of trivia in my world as a result of reading two newspapers, and the Comics section, for the last few decades. Needles is the home of Spike, brother of the Peanuts cartoon's Snoopy character. I've seen the name on other road signs and meant to go there. Now we're passing through. We only stop for cold beverages after being parched on our Route 66 drive. After 4 hours driving and walking about in heat up to 100°F, still 3+ hours to LA, and on a Sunday evening there's not going to be much open to see - perhaps another time.

I think this
is south of
Barstow, CA
on I-15_CA .

Still 2 hours to go, and increased traffic. Hampered by construction of an overpass for Victorville, CA , which burned down a couple days later.

Off I-15_CA onto CA-210 and we're back in Los Angeles. Finally, onto US-101_CA for a while and we're back from two months away to Dallas, Texas.

Skip to Back in Los Angeles if you've already browsed our afternoon Route 66 detour that's next.
